A voluntary ballast water management regime will be implemented in the Mediterranean Sea from 1 January 2012. The regime has been agreed by all countries bordering the Mediterranean and effectively urges ships to undertake ballast water exchange before entering the Mediterranean from the Atlantic or Indian Oceans.
The details of the regime have been provided to the IMO in a circular from the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC).
In its submission to the IMO (click here) REMPEC explain that the Harmonized Voluntary Arrangements are to be in place from 1 January 2012 until the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention enters into force.
