Casualties

  • Accidental pollution from tankers in the last 5 years only amounted to 23% of the pollution in the previous 5 years. Accidental pollution from tankers in the last 15 years was only 41% of the pollution in the previous 15 years
  • The tanker trades have increased every year since 1985. Tanker accidental oil pollution declined 60% at the same time as tanker activity increased by 80%.
  •  Accidental pollution from tankers was 8,000 tonnes in 2001, which is the lowest recorded by the International Tanker Operators Pollution Federation Ltd. (ITOPF). Operational oil pollution, mainly from tank washing, was estimated by industry organisations to be some 20,000 in 2001 down from 158,000 tonnes in 1990.
  • In 2001 99.998% of the oil transported arrived safely.There are some 8,000 big and small tankers supplying the world with crude oil and oil products.  These are hardly ever seen or heard of by most people, because oil transportation by tankers works.
