An Admiralty workshop entitled 'Are you ready for the new ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems) regulations? Your nine stage guide to meeting the revised SOLAS requirements' was hosted by INTERTANKO this week, attracting a full house of Members and Associate Members to our London Office.
The workshop was designed in partnership with, and was presented by, Captain Paul Hailwood, Master Mariner, who has a wealth of experience in the Merchant Navy and Maritime Industry and is a renowned expert on ECDIS and integrated bridge operations. The brochure outlining the workshop is attached (to view click here) and the full pdf manual will be made available shortly.
This Admiralty ECDIS workshop is the most comprehensive, common sense approach to ECDIS preparation that we have seen. The present situation was clearly set out with knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm, making it very clear that even with electronic aids available, we also need to establish that the basics are all firmly in place and not forgotten. Even with all electronic aids functioning, you still have to look out of the window, emphasised Hailwood.
The presentation covered legislation, equipment, training, bridge management and more basic essentials. The Admiralty Digital Integration Workshop provides a useful framework to ensure ECDIS is introduced safely and effectively.
Admiralty should be applauded for their efforts in putting on this workshop which makes their expert knowledge available to the shipping community at no charge.
Under the Admiralty brand the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) produces a worldwide series of some 3,300 paper nautical charts and 160 publications, plus a growing portfolio of Electronic Charts (ENCs) and supporting digital products and publications.
