INTERTANKO is concerned about the fate of ships' masters
involved in oil pollution incidents and will follow the Evoikos master's trial
proceedings closely. The Association, in co-operation with other international
maritime bodies, is investigating the preparation of universally agreed
guidelines for the protection and fair treatment of masters and crews involved
in oil spill incidents. Such guidance, which would be promulgated under the
auspices of the International Maritime Organization, would embody basic human
rights requirements and the principles of natural justice.
The
INTERTANKO membership includes, as Full Members, 275 tanker companies with 1,973
tankers totalling 172.6 million tons deadweight. This is equivalent to 75% of
all independently owned tanker tonnage worldwide. In addition, there are 286
INTERTANKO Associate Member
companies.
