INTERTANKO recognises the importance of addressing air pollution from tankers, both in terms of cargo emissions and engine exhausts.
INTERTANKO strongly advocates that all countries should, in the first instance, adopt IMO’s MARPOL Annex V1 Convention, before considering other specific rules to reduce or contain these emissions and even then only after various ongoing studies have been completed.
It is certainly not desirable (nor indeed practical) to have different emission standards established and enforced by different nations.
INTERTANKO also urges port states to regulate and control the quality of bunkers delivered to ships. In INTERTANKO’s view, this aspect is beyond the control of the shipowners and is an important measure to not only limit air pollution but also to prevent accidents arising from engine failures.
